March 28th, 2007: Focus on the Family and Dr. James Dobson

Who is the most influential person related with the church in American Politics today? Some would argue, Pope Benedict XVI is that man, and they may be right. Other would argue Rev. Jerry Falwell, a leader of the Conservative Christians and Head of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Still, others may argue Rev. Pat Robertson, former presidential candidate and host of the 700 Club.

I am going to argue for Dr. James Dobson, who is head of focus on the family. Unlike Falwell and Robertson, he is not really considered a kook by mainstream America (he is among the leftist kooks, but who cares). He is someone I look up to, a wise man a huge player in the Christian Conservative movement. You want to see why I find him so powerful? Look at Republican Presidential candidate Fred Thompson, former Senator of Tennessee. He has been moving up in the polls. Well, Dobson gave Fred Thompson the ax. Dobson said that he does not believe that Thompson is a Christian.

It is amazing when one man has the power to say if someone is a Christian. Thompson claims he is a Christian, but the Religious Right, led by Dobson has given him the kiss of death. To be considered not an Evangelical Christian and get nominated by the Republicans just does not happen.

In the 2008 election season, it could be the one accepted by the Conservative Christians will be the one nominated by the Republicans. If McCain or Rudy want to win, they need to somehow get them on their side, or at least hope that the Christian Conservatives (better is the term: Evangelical Christian Conservatives) is split so that their power is divided.

James Dobson endorsed George W. Bush in 2004 (he did not in 2000) and Bush got 6 million more Evangelical Christian votes. Dobson was public about this on his radio show and in his magazine. Ohio was decided by 120,000 votes, and it looks like small towns in Southern Ohio won it for him. Without Dobson, I don't think George W. Bush is president today.

That is a lot of power for Dobson, but even he cannot be the Ultimate Judge, and only God look in that Book of Life and see if Fred Thompson is there.

March 27th, 2007: Poppin' my Collar

You all now have a good reason to hit me over the head. Why you ask? On Sunday I did something that I vowed I would never do, and that is pop my collar. Only because my friend Chris was in town and she wanted the picture with the popped collar did I do it. Don't expect to see it again.

I don't remember why the subject got brought up, but I just remember talking about how much it ticks me off when I see snobs with their popped collar (usually with a pink shirt). I remember saying how I found it funny that only rap culture and snobby white boys popped their collar.

Now I got an old Three 6 mafia song in my head, and it goes something like this:

Every since I could remember I been poppin my collar
I been poppin mah collar, I been poppin mah collar
Every since I could remember
{inappropriate for the rest of the song}

March 23rd, 2007: The Sex Issue and President Simone responce

RIT has a magazine called reporter, which is a student edited magazine. While many people mock the magazine, I usually enjoy it. Still, on February 9th the Reporter staff put out a horrible issue of Reporter. You will get the jist of the article from the question I asked and Dr. Simone's response. He responded to my question and many questions on his ask the president site here

Q: This question is in regards to the February 9th issue of the reporter ("The Sex Issue"). Why did you allow this issue to be printed? If not completely stopping the issue from being printed, at least demand that the editors create a PG-13 rated cover. The cover is disrespectful to the whole RIT community. The naked bodies that spell out "The Sex Issue" had no artistic value of any kind, and was done just for the shock value of picking one up. Even if they do have artistic value, these magazines are distributed all throughout campus, and it is practically impossible to miss the cover if you walk through campus.

The contents of the issue are horrible as well. They are very biased toward secular progressivism. While making a "sex issue" is a good idea on the face of it, someone who holds the view of sex only after marriage is completely trashed from this magazine. The only mention of abstinence was this:
"A is for Abstinence: Because abstinence is power! Or whatever the government wants you to think. If you want to be like the kids in the commercials, you can interlock your hands through a fence and pretend that you are doing it. It is called "outercourse"- play without vaginal intercourse (and for some no penetration at all). Have fun with that" (from ABC's of Birth Control article, Reporter 2/9/07)

This is making a mockery of the position, with no intent of disputing the position, but just to make fun of it. If the magazine mocked another way of expressing sexuality stated in the article (GLBT Studies, BDSM, ect.), a huge uproar would have happened.

I believe that you made a hard yet good decision when shutting down the GDT a few years ago from their slander. Why do you allow Reporter to print trash and make a mockery of RIT? I am not suggesting that we shut down the Reporter, but the editors should not be able to put in whatever trash they want for the sake of pushing on their values.

Proud RIT student

A: Thank you for your note, and I share many of your concerns about the Feb. 9 edition of Reporter. I recently called a special meeting with Reporter editors and the Reporter Advisory Board, which consists of faculty and staff. It has only the second time I have called such a meeting in the past 15 years. The previous meeting was about a dozen years ago when I found an edition of “Distorter,” the April 1 edition, to be incredibly offensive to women and minorities. At that time, I established some oversight protocols for the Advisory Board.

I can tell you that I am extremely disappointed with the recent “Sex Issue” of Reporter. I do not believe it reflects the standards and values at RIT. In my view, Reporter denigrated RIT. Journalists have protections in the First Amendment and free speech. But just because something is legal, it doesn’t make it right or ethical. I have two guiding principles that I like to abide by: 1) Do no harm 2) Respect individuals

In my view, these principles were violated in this issue.

I also fear that individuals who participated in the coverage (e.g., the cover photos and the “Word on the Street” question related to favorite sex positions) could be harmed. How will this affect their employment opportunities or career advancement in the future? What if they run for political office? Their pictures and statements are recorded for the rest of their lives and also the Internet.

Furthermore, we had 5th-graders on campus that week and what message does this send about RIT? I also see this issue as negative for enrollment, with students and parents visiting campus that week. Is this the image we wish to project for RIT?

At RIT, we deeply believe in treating others with respect. But we also value free speech—and sometimes those principles conflict.

I expressed all of these views to Reporter and their Advisory Board. The editors at Reporter expressed their views, and did so articulately and with passion. They believe there was value to the magazine because it created intellectual discussions about sex on campus. It was noted that many of the articles were health related and provided a good educational opportunity to openly discuss the topic of sexuality. They noted that this edition received the highest circulation pickup on campus this year. The Advisory Board backed their views unanimously.

In the end, while I do not agree with all of their views, the students educated me regarding their perspective and objectives. I think this was an important “teaching moment” for all. It is my hope and expectation that Reporter take my concerns to heart as they take on such controversial issues in the future.

March 22nd, 2007: Balloon Police?

Don't let a balloon go in the state of New Hampshire. If you do, you could have to pay a $250 fine. Laws like this show exactly how crazy these environmentalist will go in order to push their radical agenda. While the bill says "accidential releases", it is still absurd. Read the article here: Balloon Police?

Why is any legislature touching this stuff? They are trying the please the environmental actavitist. A fun game to play is to put your name and address in a balloon and see where it ends up, hoping that the person who finds it contacts you in some way. In NH, they can't do this anymore.

There is a positive view to this, and that is that at least the NH congress aint doing something that hurts people of New Hampshire even more.

Go blow some hot air into a balloon (using Helium) and let it go outside, you may not be able to much longer. That is, unless your in New Hampshire, which you can't already.

March 19th, 2007: March Madness

It is only week 2 of the spring quarter, but things are really starting to roll. I am having a good time with my classes, especially my photo class. I am laying down in the snow taking pictures of musical instruments, and it is great. For Constitution Rights and Liberties, I am reading John Locke's 1st treatise of government, which is a counterattack of a Sir Fisher book about how Adam (the 1st man) became instant monarch through God's creation. Mathematical Statistics is fine as well, but I look forward to being done with this theoretical statistics.

The longer term questions are keeping me busy as well as I look for a place to live and job in DC while I am in graduate school. Also, I am trying to get my drivers license here in NY State. Lastly, I am trying to figure out what I am doing this sumer. I could live in DC, Rochester or Cleveland over the summer, all working or possibly do summer missions. It is something to pray and think about.

On the topic of March Madness, the basketball tourney has been fun to watch, as it is every year. My new School, George Washington got their butts kicked by Vanderbilt in the 1st round. That is fine, at least I am going to a school that can get some National sports press coverage.

Sorry, no good article here, just a little bit of what is going on in my life. I like those articles, especially when I look upon them in the future.

Decision Made!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

George Washington Univ.

The offer was too good to refuse. All classes at GWU are at night, allowing for a full time job. I will probably not get a full time job, but I plan on working part time while in school. Still, the real kicker is that GWU is going to help me get a job working for a polling agency.

It makes the most sense to choose George Washington since I will probably end up in Washington DC anyway.

I was accepted to University of Florida also, and they have a great program there. The school is more beautiful and is probably the better "college environment." Some good people have come from that program to work in DC. Still, the majority end up in Florida politics, which is not where I want to be. It would be an extra step with little connections to move from the Florida scene to the DC scene.

Thus, going to GWU should speed up my life in many respects. I was offered a $1,000 scholarship to UF and I don't think that was enough to pull me from GWU.

It is exciting and I pray that God will help me work out the details in this year of transition.

March 12th, 2007: Terrorist Victory

The terrorist attacked us six and a half years ago and they have scored a victory that they probably went to sleep dreaming would happen. I was on the School tour and I was in Washington DC. I walked through so many metal detectors that I worry about X-ray exposure to my body. People can't walk up close to the white house, for the sake of terror. People can't just go up the Washington monument, for the sake of a possible terrorist attack.

Still, there is a positive side. Most of the precautions and not ridiculous. And people now feel safer with these things into place.

Still, things will never be the same again, and for that the terrorist can rightfully claim a victory.

March 2nd, 2007: He Conquered the Grave

Jesus Conquered the Grave! The foundation of which all Christianity is based on. If Jesus did not conquer the grave, than being a Christian is stupid and a waste of time. If Jesus did conquer the grave, that not being a Christian is stupid and a waste of time (and a trip to Hell, btw).

Now, James Cameron is claiming that he has found the grave. Why is it not possible, well because Jesus Conquered it! James may be able to locate the place where Jesus was buried, but he shall find no body there.

Some Christians are worried that Cameron might find some truth kills their religion. Well, I think Cameron is more likely to prove that 2+2=5 (in base 10) before he proves that Jesus did not conquer the grave. Why am I so certain? Well, I am sure that what I believe is truth. Some would call me a zealot. I can only hope that God agrees with that assessment. What should I have more zeal over than him?

This aint rational choice theory, this aint some money hungry televangelist and this for sure aint no walk in the park.

This is the God that is Mighty to Save, and he sent Jesus Christ who conquered the grave!

Amen
