I know that I have beaten the drum on Abortion before, but I feel the need to have to do it again here. By electing Barack Obama, the American People will be selecting the most pro-choice/anti-life candidate since at least Roe v. Wade, probably since the founding of this country. While Obama claims to want fewer abortions, he has done nothing to support that claim. I do think he wants fewer abortions, but I don’t think he wants less pregnant women to choose not to have an abortion. How do I come to that conclusion, well I start by looking at his own website. Obama list two points under the “women” issues in his website, labeling the section “reproductive rights” The first point is the following: Supports a Woman's Right to Choose: Barack Obama understands that abortion is a divisive issue, and respects those who disagree with him. However, he has been a consistent champion of reproductive choice and will make preserving women's rights under Roe v. Wade a priority as President. He opposes any constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's decision in that case. Clear enough, and a fair position, yet one I clearly disagree with. This position makes him a mainstream pro-choice person. The second point is the following: Preventing Unintended Pregnancy: Barack Obama is an original co-sponsor of legislation to expand access to contraception, health information and preventive services to help reduce unintended pregnancies. Introduced in January 2007, the Prevention First Act will increase funding for family planning and comprehensive sex education that teaches both abstinence and safe sex methods. The Act will also end insurance discrimination against contraception, improve awareness about emergency contraception, and provide compassionate assistance to rape victims. The Democrats like to point out that their platform for the first time is discouraging abortion. It is a good thing to discourage unsafe sex. Still, we are missing a key point here. Obama claims to want less abortion, but he opposes anything that would slow down a pregnant woman’s ability to have one. Having an abortion is something often made as a snap decision that women later in life truly regret. I feel for their pain as it must hard to know that you have taken a person’s life (or something that will be life, for my pro-choice friends) If we truly want to lower the number of abortions, ought we to show women the gravity of this decision before they make it? I am talking about sensible restrictions that the vast majority of the American people agree on. Still, Barak Obama is against these measures. Let’s look at some of these things:
If we are going to allow abortions, ought we at least show people what they are doing if we have the technology? It is a no brainer.
If girl is making the hardest choice in her life, should not she have a discussion with her parents? It only makes sense. If we don’t have it, girls will have abortions without thinking about it much, as they don’t want their parents to find out. Let’s not even get into how he opposed the Born Alive act, which he says he voted against because he says he was worried about a life of the mother exception. This typically would be a fair position, but he is talking about killing full term babies because the mother has minor health issues. Obama himself likes to point to how rare the born alive act would be used as it is only a small fraction of abortions. He is exactly right! He claims he is against something that was voted for 98-0 because of something that very rarely happens in a rare abortion case. If he was truly about compromise on this issue, he would have been with the 98. When you vote on Tuesday, just know that a vote for Barack Obama is a vote for the most radical anti-life candidate in of a Presidential Candidate in Modern electoral history. If you can pull that lever, God bless you. While I feel Obama will make a good president in many ways, I am incredibly fearful of what is going to happen to the rights of the unborn under an Obama administration with huge majorities in the Congress. |
