The Shayko Momentum Indicator shows McCain picking up a little bit of Momentum. People may wonder how McCain picked up Momentum while both the Rasmussen and Gallup tracking polls show a one point move in Obama direction. Well, the SMI is not looking at day to day. It is showing that McCain is doing better in the tracking polls today that he was one week ago. If you look at the results last week, you will see why the SMI went in McCain’s favor. 1 Week ago Gallup showed Obama up 11 points. Today it shows Obama up 8 points, thus a three point move in McCain direction. The SMI will probably move in Obama’s direction, as the Gallup poll result on 10/12 was a 7 point Obama lead.
I think you could say that McCain has probably Topped out on his SMI number here until another even happens. If the tracking polls stay steady, the number will approach zero (no momentum). This is what Obama wants to do, freeze momentum and run out the clock on a 4-8 point victory in his direction.
