October 1st, 2008: Making the case against Early Voting

I hate early voting. I think it is stupid and it hurts our Republic. The idea on its face seems like a good one. Why not make it so that people are not confined to voting a single day? There are people who have to work on voting day and going to the polls that day is a hassle. Well, I have two major reasons why I am against early voting.

The first, and biggest, is that early voting actually has no effect, and a possible negative effect on voting. Counterintuitive? For sure, but why do I think it is right? Well, early voting takes away the community aspect of voting. It is a beautiful thing that every 4 years most of the country goes out on the same day and votes for President. Early voting really takes a lot of the away, sadly. When people all vote on the same day, it teaches children that that is the day to vote, and many kids are carried along to the polls and then when they grow up they will vote and the cycle continues.

The second reason is simply that people are voting too early. They are making a decision before they have all the information that they should have to vote. Once you vote, you can’t change it. Some scandal could happen where you would want to change your vote. There are people voting in Ohio today before 3 of the 4 debates have occurred. That just don’t make sense.

Early voting advocates have good intentions, but it just is not a good idea.
