January 14th, 2008: President (to be) at the Pulpit

I must admit that I love reading these articles about what Mike Huckabee is saying at churches. Huckabee gave a sermon to a large church on Sunday, his title: "The Sin of Being Good" Below is a quote from the local TV station:

His message was that no matter how someone tries, their actions alone will not assure them a place in heaven."We have this idea that the accumulation of good will get us in, the accumulation of bad will keep us out, when the fact is no one has eternal life because of something they have done for God," Huckabee said.

The an excerpt from the AP story on that matter is below:

"The criteria to get into heaven is you have to be not good, but perfect. That's the real challenge in it," he said at First Baptist North Spartanburg, a megachurch with 2,500 members.

"On that day, when I pull up, I'll be asked, `Do you have what it takes to get in?'" Huckabee said. "And if I ask, `Well, what does it take to get in?' 'Gotta be perfect.'"

"Well, I'm afraid I don't have that, but you know what, I won't be there alone that day. Somebody is going to be with me. His name is Jesus, and he's promised that he would never leave me or forsake me," he said.

Some people have been making a fuss about this. You mean that a preacher goes up on stage and says you can't get into heaven without Jesus? Absurd. I am amazed at how Huckabee is able to balance his faith and his political duty. When the man is in church, he talks about Jesus. When the man is out in the world, he talks about the fairtax and the sanctity of life, but he still don't turn away from Jesus.

Huckabee don't just believe that Jesus is "good for the wife and kids" He believes that it is vital to his salvation. Being a great communicator, he gave a classic gospel message Sunday morning. Would Mike Huckabee be giving a sermon in South Carolina if he was not running for President? Of course not. Still, Mike has been able to run a great campaign and has been able to have people who normally not hear the gospel hear it due to his campaign.

Huckabee fan or not, that is something that should make every believer happy.
